In Russia new MRI technologies are used for the brain research

In 2018, MRI, along with other types of tomography, remains one of the leading methods of diagnosis of soft tissues, internal organs and musculoskeletal system. In particular, it is often used to detect neurological disorders, central nervous system, spine, as well as to detect cancerous diseases. The main advantage of this method is the ability to study the problem by dividing the affected area into sections of 4-5 mm thick. Due to the effectiveness of the devices, experts work on their modernization and obtaining even better results. New MRI technologies really show their best side, and prepare for human testing.

In particular, a group of researchers from Russia has developed a unique technique that will help to explore the brain better. First of all, advanced tomography will allow to study the integrity of neural connections, which is important in the diagnosis of traumatic injuries and degenerative disorders (for example, multiple sclerosis). The project is headed by Professor of Tomsk State University and scientist of Washington Institute Vasily Yarnykh.

What is the essence of the new MRI technology?

The idea of modernization is to add the function of quantitative research of myelin. This is a special shell that covers the neural processes. If it is damaged for any reason, the connections between the cells are interrupted, because it is impossible to transmit signals at the same level. This is one of the leading processes, indicating the development of sclerosis.

The main task of the scientific group investigating the possibility of studying the integrity of the substance involves the creation of special MRI protocols, as well as the development and integration of certain algorithms into the program. Eventually, scientists hope to add the function of mapping the molecular proton fraction in tomographs. This will allow to quantify the presence of myelin in neurons, and to establish the quality of connections between them in the brain.

Russian researchers have successfully tested the new technology on laboratory mice. Balance of the work showed very good results. Head of the laboratory of neurobiology of Tomsk State University Marina Khodanovich said that a team of professionals is already preparing to conduct the first test of the improved tomography method on people suffering from multiple sclerosis.

Khodanovich also noted that the task of specialists was to choose a suitable model, that is, to create certain conditions under which myelin of laboratory animals destroyed. Later they were sent to a tomograph and compared the amount of substance in healthy and affected mice in the sections of the brain. This study was conducted at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics and the Institute of Organic Chemistry in Novosibirsk. The results of the test impressed scientists, because it was possible to achieve significant progress in this area.
