IBM Analytics reveals the forecast of the company “5 in 5” – it is done every year and talks about the five most important technologies that, according to IBM experts, will be massively implemented by 2024. In 2019, everything was related to the food chain. IBM Analytics notes that in the next 5 years, humanity will surpass the mark of 8 billion inhabitants. Due to the growing need for clean water and food, under the conditions of constant climate change, scientists will have to develop many new technologies to provide people with a relatively comfortable existence in different parts of the world.

In the agricultural sector, “twin” will help to explore the basic nuances, from soil fertility to the skills of the hired specialist and the final price of the product on the market. Researchers are convinced that such modeling will allow to predict crops better, and financial organizations will be able to simplify the procedure of crediting for beginning farmers.

Blockchain and other innovations
Blockchain, AI and IoT will allow all participants in the food chain to get the most accurate information about how much time is required to spend on the cultivation, ordering and delivery of products. The number of defective goods will decrease and all food will always be fresh.

Pathogen signals
Experts predict that after five years and farmers themselves, and outlets, and their visitors will be able to find harmful microorganisms in products. To do this, special sensors are used. Such devices will make portable or embedded in smartphones and surfaces. Smart sensors will conduct a study for the presence of pathogens in a few seconds – now it is done only in laboratory conditions and takes several working days.

According to IBM Analytics, in the near future, food safety experts will be able to quickly analyze the genetics of microbes. So they will learn more about food safety, it will also be possible to use “useful” microbes to protect food – for example, from the effects of ecology or damage by small pests. Thus, the check of food for the presence of harmful substances will take place here and now – and if the product is infected, it will be immediately removed from the shelf. So it will be possible to avoid a large percentage of poisoning.

Plastic recycling
The use of food packaging continues to worry environmentalists. In IBM it is assumed that soon all types of packaging will be recycled – from milk bottles to juice boxes. In addition, completely new approaches in the processing of waste plastic will be developed. For example, now there is a technology called VolCat, which allows to process some types of plastic for the production of new products.
